Ever insured a sandwich?

It’s not often we get to share picnic-related insurance news. However one recent article captured our attention with a report that, after hundreds of customers lost their lunch to flying thieves, a popular food truck in Scotland has begun offering ‘seagull insurance’ on their sandwiches.

The Cheesy Toast Shack in St Andrews said the pesky birds were taking food from up to 30 people a day. The aggressive gulls at this seaside spot are known to cause injury to customers and have even left small children (and sandwich-loving adults) crying over snatched sammy tragedies.

To help out (and keep customers returning despite the attacks), the food truck had been kindly replacing stolen sandwiches for their customers free of charge. However this was quickly becoming an unsustainable financial burden for the small business.

They tried different tactics to deter the pests, including flying bird-of-prey kites over their truck and playing recordings of predator birds. The gulls weren’t having any of it however.

So, thinking outside the sandwich box, they resorted to offering an optional £1 charge to cover replacement sandwiches from bird bombing. We think this is an excellent way to empower customers with greater choice for dealing with the great unknown.

Perhaps we’ll see kea insurance offered to Milford Sound visitors in the future?
